A COUPLED CREEP-PLASTICITY MODEL FOR RESIDUAL STRESS RELAXATION OF A SHOT-PEENED NICKEL-BASE SUPERALLOY Name: Dennis Justin Buchanan University of Dayton, 2007 Advisor: Dr. R. A. Brockman Shot peening has been employed in numerous industries for decades to impart beneficial compressive residual stresses on the surface of metal components. Compressive residual stresses retard initiation of surface cracks and therefore improve fatigue resistance and fatigue life. For elastic material behavior, shot-peened residual stresses remain stable under cyclic loading. Under elastic conditions, accurate fatigue life predictions, including credit for residual stresses, are possible for complex geometries with complicated load histories. For inelastic material behavior, shot-peened residual stresses may change continuously under cyclic loading, or elevated temperature static loading, such as thermal exposure and creep. Under inelastic conditions, taking full credit for compressive residual stresses would result in a nonconservative life prediction. As a result, designers are reluctant to incorporate any compressive residual stresses into fatigue life predictions of turbine engine components, subject to elevated temperatures and inelastic loading conditions. Identification and characterization of the underlying rate-controlling deformation mechanism is required for development of a reliable relaxation model for shot-peened materials. Results from this

Thermoelectric Nondestructive Evaluation of Residual Stress in Shot-Peened Metals

This paper presents a noncontacting thermoelectric method that can be used to characterize the prevailing residual stress in shot-peened specimens. This novel method is based on magnetic detection of local thermoelectric currents in the compressed near-surface layer of metals when a temperature gradient is established throughout the specimen. Besides the primary residual stress effect, the ther...

Eddy Current Assessment of Near-Surface Residual Stress in Shot-Peened Nickel-Base Superalloys

It is shown in this paper that, in contrast with most other materials, shot-peened nickel-base superalloys exhibit an apparent increase in eddy current conductivity at increasing inspection frequencies, which can be exploited for nondestructive residual stress assessment of subsurface residual stresses. It has been found that the primary reason why nickel-base superalloys, which are often used ...

Small Creep Deformations and Residual Stress Relaxation in Welded and Shot Peened Al Mg Si Cu-aluminum Alloys

The stability of compressive residual stresses and the stability of strain hardening states are seen to have high technical importance. For a laser beam welded AlMgSiCu-alloy, results of applied stress and residual stress relaxation at elevated temperatures 100<T<150°C are presented. These experiments prove the existence of back stresses. The level of these stresses can be estimated to be in th...

On the Influence of Cold Work on Eddy Current Characterization of Near-Surface Residual Stress in Shot-Peened Nickel-Base Superalloys

Shot-peened nickel-base superalloys exhibit 1–2% increase in apparent eddy current conductivity (AECC), which can be exploited for nondestructive residual stress assessment. Experimental evidence indicates that the excess AECC is due in part to elastic strains, i.e., residual stress, and in part to plastic strains, i.e., cold work. The very fact that the conductivity increases rather than decre...

Eddy Current Assessment of Near-Surface Residual Stress in Shot-Peened Inhomogeneous Nickel-Base Superalloys

Recently, it has been shown that shot-peened nickel-base superalloys exhibit an approximately 1% increase in apparent eddy current conductivity at high inspection frequencies, which can be exploited for nondestructive subsurface residual stress assessment. Unfortunately, microstructural inhomogeneity in certain as-forged and precipitation hardened nickel-base superalloys, like Waspaloy, can lea...
